Oh, tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiired.
I worked an 11-hour day today, from 8 AM to 7 PM...although part of that was my fault. I'm sometimes stupid, and sometimes too nice. The too nice part can be explained via this:
For a while now, we've been having problems with our printer in Photo. For weeks now, an error pops up telling us that a hole puncher in the printer malfunctions. When it does, the entire mammoth printer goes down. Little tiny hole punch, smaller than my pinky. If that goes down, the entire machine goes down. Very inefficient system. Now, we have called up Fuji to try to help us fix this. A couple weeks ago, they told us a suggestion, and we tried it. No good. Error still pops up from time to time. Now, every time this happens, we have to open up the printer and throw away between 20-25 feet of paper. Not to mention it backs up film to be developed, customers get angry because they don't understand what "technical difficulties" mean, and we lose business. It got worse over the last couple of days, and Alan took out the part causing the trouble and called Fuji again. Meanwhile, some of us are telling him to order a new part and have a tech come down to install it. He doesn't. Fuji then tells us another suggestion to fix the problem. It works...for a day.
It happened again this afternoon, around 3:30. I call Alan, tell him that I'm going to call Fuji and order the parts right now, because we're all sick of it. He tells me not to. Management continues to dick around. Wal-Mart doesn't want to spend money to replace components or to have a licensed Fuji technician fix it. Wal-Mart will just patch it up and it'll be ok. Keep patching it up and having temporary fixes until the thing explodes. That's Wal-Mart for you. Hell, that's capitalism and big business, always out to garner money. So, since none of the Photo managers wants to have it fixed, I decide to take matters into my own hands. I take out the offending unit and dismantle it. Totally disassemble it. Shut down the lab and work on this problem. Rather than offer a quick fix, I want to disassemble it to the point where I can get at the source of the trouble. So, I do. Screws and things everywhere. I find that these two tiny hole punches, little things no bigger than a drywall screw, are incredibly caked with dirt and loose hole punches. I would not be surprised if that was the reason for the continual malfunction. So, I clean it, reassemble it, and put it back into the printer, and I fire it up. Error. Paper can't be fed into the thing, and I realize it's because I put the hole puncher back in wrong.
Alan, who's been up at the Hudson store all day, comes back to Kingston briefly, and I make him aware of the situation, and ask him to help me. In a whiny voice, he tells me he wants to go home. So he does.
So, I put it back, and nearly 4 hours after I began, it's running again.
Kim, the designated closer, told me that she hates me. OH NO--SHE HAS TO DO WORK NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! Meanwhile, my hands are greasy and have cuts on them, and I have racked up 2 hours of overtime.
If it turns out that I have indeed fixed the problem, I demanded a bonus. I want compensation for doing the work of a Fuji technician. Wal-Mart pays a Fuji tech a little over $100 an hour. I took nearly 4 hours on it. I want $400. I don't think that'll happen. After all, why pay a licensed technician hundreds of dollars an hour when a peon who has barely any idea what he's doing can do it for less than $10 an hour? Trouble is...peons are not supposed to take apart the machines. I was getting tired of management dicking around, so I took matters into my own hands. So I let Alan know of the situation, how the printer was running, and I told him I want to be compensated, and keep the overtime I racked up.
I'll lose the overtime--they won't let me have it. So, on Thursday, instead of working 12-9, I work 2-9.
I'm too nice sometimes. But sometimes stupid. Here's why:
This particular Wal-Mart is not doing so well in sales. So, management asked many of the associates to leave early. One of the assistants came to Photo and asked everyone if they wanted to leave early. Guess who said no?
There were a couple of reasons behind that. One, I need the hours. Two, April has been losing hours this week, being sent home early because of the same reason--lack of business. If I go home early, that's a bigger cut of pay. Less money for the bank account and bill-paying. I should've gone home early, then I would not have been around to take apart the machine. I wouldn't have even known about it. So, it was a stupid move of me.
AND DDR HASN'T ARRIVED YET!!! WHAT'S TAKING THEM SO LONG?! It's been almost 2 weeks since I paid for it, damn it!
So, that was today. Tomorrow, I shall be in New Paltz. For now, shower and relaxing.
Nighty night, all!
