Since when did you become Count Chocula?
Thursday, 12 June 2008 08:02So a week has gone by, and just for the record, I remain alive. I was a bit sunburned from my weekend on the Cape, but I'm fine now. My dad and his fiance came and went, and now they're back in Texas. So I finally got to meet his fiance in person, and while she's nice, she had been rubbing me the wrong way for most of the weekend--a bit demanding, and the fact that she served as my dad's interpreter pissed me off. To recap: both my biological parents are deaf. My dad's fiance is also deaf. I know sign language, or at least more than enough to have a conversation with any deaf person. She would interpret what I said before spitting it back at him...um...hello? I already know how to speak to my dad using sign. Don't need an interpreter. She also corrected my sign language at every opportunity, which further pissed me off. I'm not in class today, thank you. It was rather hysterical watching them act like tourists--I mean, ACT like tourists. I believe with the exception of their arrival here and on the day of Heather's graduation, they had worn the exact same t-shirts. There's just something about it when both my dad and his future wife are both wearing bright red t-shirts that say "we love Texas" while hanging about in downtown Falmouth.
Regardless, the first 2 days they were here did have some fun points...Wednesday night, when they came in, they got to see me bowl in league play, and then on Thursday, we went to Central Park, took a bunch of pics, went shopping (whereupon Cheryl got touristy), and then my dad completely raped me and Ryan in bowling on the dollar night. If he can bowl close to 200 with a house ball...I fear how he can bowl with his own. Then again, this is the man who taught me. It wasn't a total loss, though--of the 5 games, I did beat him once.
Friday, went to the Cape with them in tow, and upon arriving, dinner plans were changed at the last second, and we got fried seafood from Sam's (best fried seafood place EVAR!). Also got to meet Heather's cool boyfriend. However, because my dad strictly adheres to the times he takes his meds (8 AM and 8 PM), we had to make plans to have breakfast at 8 AM, which meant I had to get up at 7 in the fucking AM on a SATURDAY. April and I ended up awake at 6:45 AM, drowsily went to breakfast, and back to my parents' house for a bit before heading to Heather's graduation. There, got to see my stepsister Jen, her boy James, and her son James Jr. Oodles of cute, that 2 year old boy. And man, did he ever gravitate to me. Was speaking my name before the day was out.
Then we went to my sister's graduation, to which I took many pics, my mom was bawling her eyes out, and while the students and guest speaker went on driveling about whatever, my attention was fixed on an osprey couple and its young, nesting atop the nighttime stadium lighting.
After the ceremony, it was back to the parents' house for the party, almost entirely family. But we had enough for wiffleball. But it was during the party that something amazing happened. For the first time since I moved off the Cape, I got to see uncle David (with a new future wife, the former aunt long divorced), cousin Jimmy, and Lisa. The best part...David and my stepdad are on speaking terms again, 3+ years later. They reconciled, which was an amazing sight for my grandma. And for me. Great food and fun was had into the night, and I slept very soundly in the nice cool basement.
And what an awesome day it was. Until Sunday morning, when the heat wave began. I woke up, got near the top of the steps and felt the heat through the closed door. Heat and oppressive humidity. And went back downstairs to wake up in the cool air. Needless to say, after an enjoyable breakfast of grilled tuna steaks, we departed for home. An enjoyable weekend. Then on Monday, after having some lunch with the two Texans, I sent them back on their way home when I dropped them off at Albany airport. And that ended my babysitting.
So I got into work Tuesday, and more news would wait for me there. Most of you know by now, by seeing my Facebook status, but I (finally) got a promotion! I move up 3 salary grades to a grade 9, same as April. The position is within the Lottery, but a different office--which means away from the Bible-humpers I work with, boss included. I begin it in 2 weeks, and so April and I will celebrate our mutual promotions tonight. With April and I making now nearly a combined $60k a year, we've begun the search for a new apartment, and we've got 3 places lined up to visit this Saturday. Excitement is abound, and thanks to everyone who wished me congrats!
On a final note, voting for the next contest will end soon, and so I will be posting the second round voting, eliminating those with the least votes. Here's the poll, this poll will probably stay up for 2 weeks.
And now, breakfast and work.
