You've been Unferth'd!
Saturday, 24 July 2010 18:56The recovery from the abscess continues on; the thing's tiny now, almost non-existent. However, there is some pain involved--mostly because now the incisions are trying to close and scab up, and moving causes a stinging sensation as a result. But healing continues.
So, last Wednesday, it was another trip to Tanglewood, my 4th this year, to see a performance of Beowulf. Wyatt & Jess tagged along with April and I, and we descended on Seiji Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood to see Benjamin Bagby perform the first third of the poem in the original Old English, accompanied with a harp. I say a third of the epic, because if he'd performed the entire work, we would've been there for about 6 hours. Unfortunately, from our position on the lawn, we could not see the English subtitles being displayed on the screen above the performer's head.
It was a night of food and drink (lots of mead), and much fun. Because of the medication I'm on for this abscess, I had to settle for my non-alcoholic Snapple. That's ok, because I got to see Wyatt get very happily drunk.
During the performance, there was a storm approaching, so we were herded into the performance hall itself, where we got to see the subtitles for the last twenty minutes or so. In any event, it was a great show, and I really liked listening to it--it really gives you a sense of how it may have been told when the story was originally written a thousand years ago. I've since ordered the DVD so I could actually see what I was too far away to see.
Thanks, Wyatt & Jess for coming up--it was a lot of fun!
Our next (and final) trip to Tanglewood this year will be on August 14, where Danielle comes with us to Film Night, with John Williams conducting the Boston Pops. Mr. Williams will be performing movie scores from the movies of Steven Spielberg. Also, we get to see a Prelude Concert before the show, so we'll get some chamber music before the main show.
Wyatt, if you haven't realized by now, you left your enormous stein here.
Oh, yeah, and RenFaire's coming up. I can't wait. :)

And now, loafing.
