What a day...this is a day I'd like to forget.

At around 8 AM this morning, April was rushed to Benedictine Hospital in Kingston because she awoke with sudden excruciating pain on the lower right side of her abdomen, around the kidney/appendix area. She awoke with this at 5 AM, and asked me to call 911 around 7:30. I had called April's mother shortly after checking April into the hospital. Before they began testing, all kinds of thoughts ran through my head as to what could've happened so suddenly.

Appendicitis.
Some sort of intestinal blockage.
Gas bubble.

Appendicitis was the top on my list. However, they came back with the results of the initial blood work/urine test and discovered that April wasn't pregnant, which was blatently obvious, and they ruled out appendicitis given how fast and sudden this came about. They were open to 3 possibilities--some sort of cyst around the ovaries, an ovary beginning to twist, and a kidney stone.

Around 11 AM, they do the ultrasound, but before, they drug April on some morphine knockoff which put her in a happy place, in addition to giving her something like industrial-strength Advil. By this time, her parents arrive, and some time passes. Nurses and doctors come in from time to time, check her vitals, give her more drugs, etc. Meanwhile, I'm starving, since I hadn't eaten since last night, and it was nearly 2 PM. So, I go eat, come back and find that the ultrasound results showed nothing. So, they run a CT scan.

By this time 4 PM rolls around, the drugs are wearing off, and April's vomiting. They find the winning diagnosis in the CT scan--a 2mm kidney stone. Small enough to pass through, but still a pain in the ass. Won't require surgery. At first, they were going to send her home with prescription Vicoden, and gave her some to start, just to see what would happen--she threw it back up, and it was decided that she'd stay overnight. Now, the urologist, who happened to be on call and was present, came down to see her, talk about what the next plan was.

Basically, they're gonna stuff her full of liquid and hope that the stone passes by forcing her to pee. A lot. And they'll keep an eye on her, see what happens. If they don't get it out by Friday, the doc is going in and getting it out. No surgery--they're going to slip a scope up her...well...pee hole (to avoid being utterly graphic), up the ureter and pluck it out. They'll replace the affected area with a small stint as to prevent the ureter from closing up, and leave it in for 4 days, upon which they remove it. End of kidney stone.

When we (April's mom and myself) left her around 7 tonight, she was quite drugged and falling asleep. We'll see how she fares tomorrow. As a result, I may be late for work.

Also, as a result, the trip to Cape Cod for this weekend has been postponed to whenever. As for the contest, I'm closing the battles at 10:30, and that'll be it. We'll take a 1 day pause, because I don't have the energy left to do anything. I just want to sleep.

Even though it looks like everything will be all right, I'm nervous as hell.
