Goodness gracious, my cross-contaminator.
Monday, 27 November 2006 23:54Yes, I'm still alive. Been too long, but yes, still alive. I was on Cape Cod for the Thanksgiving weekend with April, as the car situation ended for the better, which meant I didn't have to spend $150 for a Greyhound bus ticket, and I wasn't apart from April. There was no traffic on the way there, but coming back, we ran into a few trouble spots on the MassPike, and combined with a rest stop, we got home a little over an hour later. Glad to be home...I'm discovering that I can only take my family in small doses after leaving them 18 months ago to move back to New York. But, away we go.
Wednesday night, we arrive, and essentially crash. I was sitting in the car with my laptop hooked up to a power inverter which was hooked into the cigarette lighter, gaining ground on NaNoWriMo. Managed to pull 2600 words on the trip there, and that was that.
Thursday was spent entirely inside, and while I was playing video games with my sister Heather, having fun with the Wi-Fi on my DS and playing Mario Kart across the internet, and writing, turkey and everything was being made. My dad called, spoke to him for a bit. My stepfather's Japanese boarder was on his way back from Boston, and so we had a late Thanksgiving dinner. My grandma came over for a bit, but left before dinner, citing that she didn't want to drive home in the dark. By 7 PM, just before dinner, we were quite hungry and had crowded around the meat thermometer, waiting for the bird to get to 185 degrees. This was a 23-lb. bird, after all. After stuffing our faces, we loafed a bit, April brought up some Doctor Who, and pie was had later. My aunt Janna came over as well, and she got a kick out of Larry the Cable Guy. Despite the pouring rain and driving wind, it was a nice turkey day.
Black Friday rolls around, and while everyone goes shopping, April and I stay home. Having worked in retail on Black Friday before, it is an experience I never want to have again, whether as an employee or a customer. It's the day you see people at their meanest, and will stop at nothing to get those amazing deals. Besides, who the fuck wants to shop at 5 AM after downing all that food the night before? Please. I prefer sleep. I spent the day writing and gaming, mostly. And having arguments with my sister. For those of you who have any interest at all, my 16-year old sister has beaten me to the driving license. BIG DEAL. However, she kept trying to show off by asking me to go on a drive with her, to which I refused. And while I'm her sibling, she has no insurance. So that ruled that out.
Rather than digress into a very, very long rant about my sister here, I will save that for another post for when I talk about more news from the Cape. Let me just say this, though. My sister is not the same person she was 3 years ago. Hell, my sis isn't the same person she was 1 year ago. A couple of years ago, she was smart, spot on, and was great. Now, she has become THE stereotypical 16-year old teenager: an annoying prat who is utterly rebellious, doesn't need her parents at all, thinks the world completely revolves around her, knows EVERYTHING, and is doing everything she can to be trendy, simply because it's the "in" thing. This was the kind of female I DESPISED in high school. I never even heard of Vera Bradley (spelling?), Ugg boots, and wristlet purses until 2 weeks ago. My poor parents...and poor April. She ended up blowing up at my sister.
Saturday, we get out of the house--Bob, Mom, April, Heather, and myself. We head down to The Knob, located at Quissett Harbor near Woods Hole. Had my camera with me, and took some AMAZING shots. So calendar-worthy. At the end of NaNoWriMo, expect a big update in Mad Squirrel Photos in early December. More dog pics, fall pics, and Cape Cod pics are just some of the upcoming new pics to be added, as well as some new pics to the DeviantArt. And such a beautiful day it was. We needed to get out of the house--cabin fever was starting to set in, especially with April. After a walk at The Knob, we drove the beach route home, going through Woods Hole and Falmouth Heights, mostly along the Falmouth Road Race route. We stopped at Shaw's and Wal-Mart for some shopping, and it is there that I see most of my Cape friends for the first time in 18 months: James and Vickie from Photo, Brianna, Heather Riley (who's now married), Alyssa, and Cilla. Ronny I missed because he was off, being a department manager and all that. I miss them all...but I was glad to see them, if only briefly. We got back, and more loafing, writing, and gaming ensued until nighttime.
Sunday arrives, we have breakfast, and go home. April and I hadn't had sex in 4 days, so when we arrived home...needless to say, we made up for lost time. We shall return to the Cape for Christmas in a month, of which I will look forward to eventually. Right now, I'm going through a nice cleansing--mentally, anyway. I can only take the family in very small quantities now. I'm still very grateful that I'm here and not there, and also grateful that my own immediate family has their own house away from the 291 Old Barnstable Road asylum. From what I heard, that house is now getting repossessed. My uncle's family has fallen into such dysfunction, and now they've lost the house...they have to be out by Christmas, or be forced out by the Town of Falmouth. Shame...I've had many happy memories of that house and property from when I was a kid. I would've liked some pics of the house before it goes bye-bye, but at least I've got the memories.
And April. That's all that matters.
So now, this is getting near midnight, and now I'm in the final stretch for NaNoWriMo. As of tonight, I'm just under 45,100 words, and now begins the final drive to the end. The novel itself will NOT be finished by November 30, but I will have crossed the 50,000 word mark. Then I can have my life back and turn my attention toward the upcoming winter contest. And my pics. And April. Not necessarily in that order.
But now, bed.
Nighty night, all.
