Next DLC Recording Day: Saturday, July 23
Thursday, 14 July 2011 17:20Time for the next session to record another few Downloadable Content episodes. The next recording day will be Saturday, July 23, starting very likely around 1 PM ET. If you are interested in recording for any of the likely episodes, please let me know. Here are the 3 episodes I hope to record:
First episode: I would like to discuss some of the rather unsavory trends going on in the industry at the moment. Specifically, I'd like to discuss what I perceive as the industry pulling a page out of Hollywood's book whenever they run out of new ideas--namely, reboots, re-imaginings, and re-painting. I'm noticing more and more that game studios are, instead of letting their franchises bow out gracefully, they decide to milk the cash cow by rebooting/remaking the series or best-selling games (with a few egregious examples being Tomb Raider, Twisted Metal, Zelda: OoT), re-imaginings (Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, for example), or just slapping a new coat of HD graphics on (what Capcom and Konami want to do with some of the Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid games, respectively) Are you a fan of these, or do you think it's as ridiculous as I seem to think it is?
Second episode: Following up on Episode 3, where we discussed the Supreme Court case dealing with California's law to make selling violent video games a crime, I'd like to take an episode and discuss the ruling that came out striking that law down. Even though the Supreme Court sided with the industry (which I agree with), they, perhaps unintentionally, reinforced our double standard in the US, which is: sex bad, violence good. What are your thoughts on the issue? (Ideally, I'd like to have Episode 3's panel back, with possibly an additional 1 or 2 people)
Third episode: The burgeoning movement known as 3D. More and more studios and developers are trying to make their games in eye-popping 3D. I'm not quite so taken with the idea just yet, so what can the industry do to gain fans in this potentially lucrative new form of gameplay?
