By the Great Parrot of Hades...
Monday, 29 August 2011 21:00Well. First off, April and I are fine after the ransacking that was Irene. Brought a lot of wind and rain, but we were fine. If anything, I felt that the lead-up was a bit hyped and overblown, although after seeing images of the damage done in places nearby, I found myself very glad that the storm failed to live up to the hype. We didn't suffer a single power outage. However, in true fashion, because the Universe loves fucking with me, the power did go out today--on this bright, sunny, absolutely gorgeous day--in fact, it went out EIGHTEEN FUCKING TIMES. Each outage was a brief, ten-second affair, just long enough to shut down your computer and kill the modem and routers before power flicked back on. These 18 pissant outages occurred over the span of about 2-3 hours, and finally, all seems to have been restored.
April and I didn't go to work today because as of earlier this morning, all bridges going over the Mohawk River were closed. Yet, apparently, I was the only asshole who called out of the office. Everyone else made it in, taking giant detours in the process. My boss felt it necessary to call me over this fact, expressing "concern" that I was running low on paid leave. I AM AWARE, AND HAVE BEEN AWARE, BUT I WASN'T GOING TO TAKE A NEARLY HOUR-LONG DETOUR TO GET TO A PLACE THAT'S NORMALLY 10 MINUTES AWAY, SINCE EVERY OTHER SCHMUCK IN THE CAPITAL REGION WAS DOING THE EXACT SAME THING AT 8 AM. I DIDN'T WISH TO GET TO SCHENECTADY BY WAY OF SARATOGA, THANK YOU MUCH.
[/rant]
And from what I'd find out later, barely anyone was at the Lottery anyway. So I feel justified FOR NOT DRIVING INTO A FLOOD ZONE.
As the day went on, the river did recede enough to where some of the bridges did re-open, including the one I normally take. So I will be back to work tomorrow. However, April and I did spend some time in Scotia surveying the damage, and yeah...I've never seen the Mohawk that high. Jumpin' Jacks, a local landmark and awesome grease pit, was halfway submerged. All of Collins Park was underwater. You can check out the pics I took by clicking here.
Everyone I spoke to yesterday seemed to be doing well, so I'm grateful for that.
In other news, April and I headed to Tanglewood last Friday for the final time, seeing a concert performance of Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess," something I've wanted to see for quite a while. It didn't disappoint, and I thought it was a nice way to wrap up our visits to the concert venue for the summer.
Coming up on Labor Day weekend will be my last trip to the Renaissance Faire this season, although it's going to feel a bit odd--for the first time since April and I have been together, April will not be accompanying me this trip. She'll be down on Long Island with family, so I will find myself in the odd position of having the apartment all alone for 3+ days. I'm going to need to figure out what to feed myself, and how to amuse myself after work. It's been well over a year since I have been left without April for any length of time (except for the PAX weekend earlier in the spring), so there we are.
Hopefully all of you here in the Northeast are safe and doing well after the storm; I'll be seeing many of you this weekend!
