So last weekend in the Bronx was fun. A lot of fun. Ryan and I got down to Suffern on Friday night, checked into the Howard Johnson, and ate at the attached Friendly's...and in doing so, ran into someone whom I hadn't seen since high school, someone who was in Varsity Choir with me, graduating a year before I did. Quite nice. After, we loafed until bed, and then on Saturday, we went to State Line Diner (best diner EVAR), and then it was off to Yankee Stadium. We got there 2 hours early, in time to watch both teams (Yanks and A's) take batting practice. It was broiling in there, but we had plenty of money to keep us hydrated ($5 for a bottle of water...$5 for a bottle of Coke...$17 to park...so, this is how Steinbrenner can afford to overpay the Yankees). The dudes at the entranced forced Ryan to throw away his sunblock (because it was in too large of a container, but I got in fine...tiny containers and big, concealing pockets pockets do wonders).
An aside: today, in the New York Post, there was an article on just that, how the Yankees staff forces people to throw away their sunblock at the gates. If you want sunblock, you are forced to buy it from their shops--a 1 oz. bottle of SPF 15 for $5. Go on, clicky.
So, with my snuck-in bottle of SPF 45, Ryan and I were safe from the sun, which was constantly beating down on us for ALL FIVE HOURS OF THE BALLGAME. That's right, the game went into extra innings--3 more, in fact--before the game ended with a walk-off hit batter in the bottom of the 12th. (in English, for those not familiar with baseball: if the bases are loaded and the batter gets hit by the pitch, then the batter advances to first base, and everyone moves up a base, allowing the runner at third base to come in and score). And for the awesome time I had at the Stadium, I think I can honestly say that I was a Yankee fan for a day. How could I not, with an awesome game like that? For while I'm a Red Sox fan, I am also a fan of the game...and how can you not want the home team, wherever it is, to win? Do you know how hard it is NOT to get caught up with 50,000+ cheering fans? So yes, it was an awesome day, and the sunblock prevented me from getting burned...on 99.9% of my body. I got sunburned in the only place I didn't put on sunblock...my lower left earlobe. Go fig.
So it was back to work, and coming up this weekend will be the signing of the new lease (whereupon we can begin moving into the new apartment), and also going to Tanglewood to see John Williams and the Boston Pops for their annual Film Night, where they perform music from movies, including some of John's own music from movies he's composed for. Which brings me to an important question, so read on.
I got 3 tickets to see this performance, which is slated for this Saturday, July 26. The original party consisted of April, her brother Ryan, and myself. Last weekend, Ryan informed me that his bosses were not going to give him this Saturday off (for the record, he did request it in advance, but you know retail--my god, TWO Saturdays off in a row! THE COMPANY WILL COLLAPSE!!!), and his chances of switching shifts with someone is pretty low. This now means I have ONE, and only ONE ticket. April and I are still going. The question is this: if it is a definite that Ryan will not be coming, who wants to take that one ticket and go with us? It's very short notice, I know, but I just found this out last weekend myself. If more than one of you want it, then I'll have to flip a coin, pull a name out of a hat, or something. Let me know soon.
And that is pretty much it, methinks. I think it's now time for some gaming. Xenogears is my current project. And well...if that doesn't work, then dial information. Thank you for calling.
