Crohn's disease sucks. Just let me make that abundantly clear.
So, here we are. Three months after the abscess in my crotch made itself known, it's very likely that this whole mess was Crohn's-related after all, and not just the result of some stubborn Staph bacteria.
Crohn's is a disease that can strike anywhere in the digestive system. And I do mean anywhere.
So, what happened: while I was feeling no pain in the stomach area for the last 6, 7 months, the Crohn's was happily and quietly being very active without me knowing it. And 3 months ago, it decided to manifest itself between my legs. A fistula formed, which led to infection and abscess.
What the surgeon did was: clear out the infection, correct the fistula and put in a seton to relieve pressure and make sure that feces doesn't get into the wound area and re-infect it, took a biopsy, and packed the wound open with gauze so that the abscess can be drained of infection.
It means that a) I'm sore, b) I'm on antibiotics, c) and that I'm going to be staying home for an extended period of time. It may mean I'll have to withdraw from classes this semester, since it's anticipated I'll be out a few weeks.
Every day for the next week, a nurse will visit the apartment to change out my bandage. Since that's a bit painful, I've been given hydrocodone.
So thanks to each and every one of you who've wished me well--I love you guys, and hopefully I'll be back up on my feet and being the me you all know and love.
The biggest thanks of all goes to my wife, who continues to stay by my side and take care of me as best she can. I'm going to have to give her a basket of puppies or something when this is all over.
So it goes.
