I told you to expect an announcement regarding Character Battle 13 this week, and so here it is.

I had said that this contest was going to involve characters from some of video gaming's classic franchises; specifically, ones that turned a milestone anniversary this year (20th, 25th, etc) With the help of the poll I put up in Facebook, asking which franchise would YOU like to see represented, I came to this decision. Funny story, though, before I announce it--last year, I knew The Legend of Zelda was turning 25, so I wanted to do a 64-character battle contest with just Zelda characters. Upon doing research, I found that there aren't 64 characters in the series; not without heavy digging into NPCs and obscure enemies.

So, doing more research, I found that Dragon Quest (another long-running RPG series that I enjoy immensely, difficulty of the games aside) is also turning 25. So I thought to split it up--32 characters from each franchise. But then I did MORE research, and found that at least six major gaming franchises hit milestones this year--Sonic, our favorite blue hedgehog, turns 20. Zelda, Dragon Quest, Metroid, and Castlevania all hit 25. Donkey Kong turns 30.

It wasn't until that poll that I decided that I would have 4 franchises represented--with 16 characters for each. This way, the 16 characters for each franchise would be somewhat well-known, instead of having to dig into obscurity to simply fill out 64 characters, where everyone's heard of about half. Zelda and Dragon Quest were going to be represented here, regardless of the outcome of the voting, because I wanted those two in specifically, so the voting really was to decide what the other two franchises would be.

And so, the graphic below:

16 characters from Sonic, Zelda, Dragon Quest, and Castlevania will be represented in my 13th Character Battle contest, once again being hosted on The Battling Arena, but probably with a couple of major changes in terms of voting. I'm heavily considering using Facebook's new polling feature for contest battles, as the FB polls have the potential for a lot of votes. The only thing keeping me from fully committed to using Facebook polls is that you have to have a Facebook to vote on them. And some of the people I know who vote and compete in these contests don't have a Facebook. Give me your thoughts on the matter.

So, yes, there's your announcement. Signups won't begin until late May, but I will be asking for character suggestions soon so I can make a good contest bracket for you all.

Once signups begin, I will re-enable signups for anyone who may want to register at The Battling Arena.

Feel free to spread the word around!
