a_bit_of_wit_2...don't say yes, because you're liable to get punched in the face. I have to believe in a god, because even a deity needs a good chuckle at humanity's expense.
So we got some more flooding as a result of the remnants of Tropical Storm General Lee, and so all the cleanup work that had begun from Irene was un-done. Once again, widespread flooding, and today, around 2:30, it was broadcast that all the Mohawk River bridges (except for one) would be closed. This meant that I'd have to go home by way of Clifton Park and make a giant circle, which, when there's not everyone heading to Schenectady and points west, is about an hour's drive during the best of times. However, now the only way to get anywhere west of Albany was to cross this one bridge. Everyone in creation, it seemed, would now be using it. The bridge I use being closed, a 10-minute drive would now become a hellish commute.
When news first hit, the head of the office told us we could go home early and try to get a jump on the commute. I did the responsible thing and called my immediate boss, who was at the time out of the office at a doctor's appointment, (the same woman who gives me shit about having doctor appointments every other Friday, and also the same woman who has no problems working 16-hour days for no extra pay because she's convinced that if something doesn't get done that day, the Lottery WILL implode) and when I told her the news and that EVERYONE had left (and I do mean everyone in the office, I was the last schmuck to leave), she had the nerve to ask why...because flooding, natural disasters, and major road closures aren't cause to get safely home.
So I left at 3:45 (I normally leave at 4), April got me, and as we began to make this giant circle, I had called that once we got home, we'd find out that all the bridges were re-opened.
And so it was. After what ended up being a 2-hour detour for a drive that normally takes 10 minutes (although an hour of that could've been shaved off if it wasn't for the fact that one state trooper on the side of the highway caused 8 miles of backup), I found out that just a few minutes after I would've normally left work, all the bridges were re-opened.
