Yes, a question for all of you. I'm hoping for comments on this one because it's a serious question.

The question is of a technological nature, and if I could get as many replies to this as possible, then that'd be great.

The situation is this: before long, I am going to need a laptop. I don't have one that I can call mine--the one I use currently is April's old laptop, which is dying. It's getting to the point now where opening up a program takes 5-10 minutes. It's 7 years old, and it's nearly to the point where it won't shock me if one day, I push the power button, the thing coughs and sputters like it has emphysema, and then just blows up like Strong Bad's first computer, the Tandy. The new laptop is going to happen, sooner or later. In fact, once I progress further into my Fine Arts degree and press on into the more advanced photography classes, it will get to the point where it's going to be required of me to get a Mac or MacBook, specifically.

The questions I have for all of you are thus: what makes a Mac that much better than a Windows-based laptop? Both of the operating systems will run the programs I will very likely be using. As it currently stands, my experiences on Photoshop have all been on a Windows OS, and I've had no problem. Both, at least, from a hardware perspective, have the same processors, RAM, etc, etc. As far as I know, since both sorts of computers contain similar internal hardware, the only thing really separating Macs from Windows computers are the fact that Macs are shiny. A MacBook and a Windows-based laptop can both likely perform the types of photo work I'll need my system to do. So why is it that Sage College will eventually ask for me to get a $1500 Mac, when I can get a good Windows-based laptop for hundreds of dollars less and can do the same thing? Why has Mac become the standard for artists, and why do every art student I see at Sage sport one? What makes a Mac the standard system for any artist doing photo and/or graphics work, when a Windows system can do the same thing for much cheaper and have similar performance?

And so I wait for your replies. And to those that do, thanks. I want to make a very informed decision when I do end up buying a laptop, and I'd like to better understand why Mac has become the standard. I don't have $1500 to drop on a Mac if a Windows system can do all the same things for much less money.

Please--educate me.
